Home decor and remodeling ideas for a techie/geek?

Question by Saliano: Home decor and remodeling ideas for a techie/geek?
I’m obsessed with any new techie toy I can get my hands on and am a self-proclaimed geek. I would like to integrate my interest and love of technology into the decor and and “theme” of my place as I remodel. I just moved in and am running low on ideas. Anyone have any cool recommendations? If it helps, I live in a dorm type layout, am female, and have my own room (even though there are roommates that share the commons but they’re very lax on how I decorate). My budget is mid-grade (I am a student), and I do have the luxury of being able to paint my place, so if you could recommend colors too, that’d be awesome. Any websites with pics would be helpful as well. Thanks!!!

have you thought about decorating your toys? There are stick-on jewels and things like that — if you decorate the toys, then you want a kind of “museum” look to display your things. I’d choose a cold white color, with black or white shelves, and little pops of whatever jewel color predominates.

If you like the look of plain techie toys, go with white or black walls, black or white shelves (opposite), and display your toys on them, with books on alternate shelves. “Pop” the color with a bright red (like a red vase of white flowers, or other red accent items). You’d want low-key coloring for the floors.

On the other end of the scale, there’s always the “New England Trader” look, which would be rich turkey reds and deep blues, with an oriental carpet, and the tech toys taking pride of place on the knick-knack shelves. You can use a trunk to store your junk and hide some of the wires.

Q&A: I need help with Modern Luxury Home Decor…?

Question by toato: I need help with Modern Luxury Home Decor…?
I am trying to redecorate my living room with a modern luxury theme. I will be reupholstering my sofa but I’m not sure if I should use a print or solid. When you see certain prints like flowers, dots, plaids, or stripes do you think old or cheap? What upholstery says ‘modern luxury’ to you?

Answer by dilbertina
So you want to express this style for your living room that is a luxurious take on a modern style? And right now you are struggling with what to reupholster the sofa with to create this style. So you have gone from a big conceptual style idea to a really small specific task.. it would be easier if you back up a little here and consider a few other things, The more clearly you define how you want the room to feel and how you want to use it,and have it look, the easier these choices are. You could collect photos and circle elements that seem significant. Designers use swatches, photos, and bits and pieces of wood, shades trims, and even chrome or porecelain, to help, see the room as a whole composition and each piece we chose supports the overrall style we want to create. I wonder if reupholstery is going to get you a modern luxury look? Is your sofa frame modern with the profile and scale of the style you have in mind? Take a digital photo of it in black and white, to see it objectively. Unless its very close to your style, you would be better off buying something affordable to help you create your look, you can decide by trying things out on paper, visit a few large home stores, use their software and create a floorplan and get images of furniture. I love your concept, because the best moderrn needs luxury and we get that through lavish use of texture, fur, linen, silk, metal, rough and smooth
in accents and accessories you can really get a look going, check out ethan allens new modern glamour room styles, for inspiration. You just need to develop your ideas of your individual style, establish some style icons you can translate to your own. I hope this has not been a rambling yadayada…its such a great style, explore!

What is the success probability of an online home decor store?

Question by Justus Will be Delivered Jan. 28: What is the success probability of an online home decor store?
My sister and I are very much into Americana/Primitive decor and have a knack for creating most of the decorations ourselves. I have been looking into starting an online primitive decor store and was wondering if anyone had actually had any success with an online store. I would be purchasing a website and designing and hosting my own website. I plan on buying most of my items from a wholesale dealer and creating the rest (handmade signs, stitchery, etc.). So, has anyone ever had any success with starting and running an online business of any sort? And if so, would you have any tips to get me started and off my feet? Thanks in advance!

Yes, it can be successful! It is a definite niche – and the key to your success will be marketing it right.

Look into SEO (search engine optimization), and also the Bum Marketing Method. Please know that you do not have to spend an arm and a leg to advertise, but I bet you will be best off doing some sort of a PPC (pay per click) campaign.

Also, keep in mind that with the economy the way it is, sales might start off more sluggish than they normally would in a good economy – just don’t spend tons of money, get in debt up to your eyeballs and throw in the towell! Market smart and you will be fine! As with any business, you really can’t expect to be making $ 100′s your first month.

As far as purchasing from wholesalers, I suggest that you find a drop shipper. This way, you will not need to purchase the merchandise and have it sitting in storage while you are waiting for people to purchase it. You won’t make as large as a profit with drop shipping wholesalers, but in the beginning of your business, it can save you a TON of money by doing it this way.

I am not quite sure what “Americana/Primitive” decor is all about, but you might want to look into SMC. You do have to pay about $ 500 to get your membership, but you can make a really good profit on their merchandise – if they have what you are wanting to sell. You will also find a ton of things for personal use with them as well!

For sure, make your own things and put them up for sale! You might want to check out www.etsy.com. It is a site where people put up their craft items and they get a lot of visitors each and every month. Doing that could save you the headache of actually starting your own site off the bat, and you could see what kind of demand there is for your product. If I am remembering correctly, they offer the sales through their own merchant account, so you won’t even need to worry about that headache!

Remember, the key to success on any online store is marketing. Do it right and you won’t have a problem. (Of course, you have to have a niche, but you already do.)

Good luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
